How We Deliver Careers Education
Students access careers education and guidance through a wide range of opportunities, including:
- Tutor time and Personal Development lessons
- Assemblies and themed careers events
- Curriculum-based careers learning
- Employer encounters and workplace visits
- Visits to colleges, universities and training providers
- Workshops delivered by employers and industry professionals
- Virtual careers events and online opportunities
- Independent careers research
- One-to-one careers guidance interviews
- Events such as our Futures Fair, Inspiration Days and Work Experience Programme
Supporting Your Child
Parents and carers play a vital role in helping young people make informed decisions about their future. We encourage families to support students in engaging positively with the many careers and education opportunities available throughout their time at Thornhill Academy.
Careers Information and Resources
The Student Careers Section of our website contains a wide range of resources to help students and families research careers, qualifications and future pathways.
Our Labour Market Information (LMI) section provides valuable information about local, regional and national employment trends, helping students understand where future opportunities are likely to be found.
Careers Guidance and Options Support
All students receive a one-to-one careers guidance interview during Key Stage 4.
Year 9 students receive additional support when making their GCSE option choices through:
- Guidance lessons
- Assemblies
- Curriculum-based careers activities
- Information provided to parents and carers

We value feedback from parents and carers and use it to help improve our careers programme.

Part Time work
Part-time work and volunteering can be excellent ways for young people to develop employability skills, gain valuable experience, build their CV and earn money.
There are legal restrictions on the hours young people can work and the types of work they can undertake. These regulations are designed to safeguard children and ensure that employment does not negatively affect their education or wellbeing.
Employers must obtain the appropriate permits when employing school-aged children.
