Thornhill Academy Site Manager Receives National Pearson Teaching Award Recognition

We are celebrating after our Site Manager Andy Peterson was recognised with a prestigious Silver Award in the Unsung Hero category at the Pearson National Teaching Awards.

The award recognises Andy's exceptional contribution to education and his remarkable commitment to the Thornhill Academy community since joining the school in 2019.

Described as the "heartbeat of Thornhill Academy", Andy works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the school remains safe, operational and welcoming for students, staff and visitors. Living on site and effectively available around the clock, he plays a vital role in responding to emergencies, maintaining facilities and supporting the wider school community.

Liam Clark, Principal of Thornhill Academy, said: "Andy is the very definition of an unsung hero. Thornhill simply would not be the school it is today without him, and we are delighted to see his incredible contribution recognised on a national stage."

Students and staff came together for a special Thank a Teacher assembly, where all staff received heartfelt messages and video tributes from students expressing their appreciation for the support, care and opportunities they provide every day. The celebration continued with tea and cakes, before Andy was presented with the surprise news that he had received the national award.

Over the past six years, Andy has been instrumental in keeping Thornhill Academy running despite the significant challenges presented by the school's ageing buildings. His dedication has helped ensure that students continue to learn in a safe and supportive environment while plans progress for the school's forthcoming rebuild.

Beyond his day-to-day responsibilities, Andy has overseen major repair projects across the school, including restoring facilities affected by water damage, maintaining the community sports hall and swimming pool, and supporting the development of specialist provision.

Andy's contribution has played a significant role in creating the positive environment recognised in Thornhill Academy's recent Ofsted inspection and has helped support some of Sunderland's most disadvantaged young people to thrive.

Michael McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer of Consilium Academies, said: "Andy embodies everything that is great about education. His commitment to Thornhill Academy and the community it serves is truly exceptional. For years, he has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the school remains a safe, welcoming and inspiring place for young people to learn and succeed. His impact reaches far beyond the school site, touching the lives of students, families, colleagues and community groups alike. This recognition is richly deserved, and everyone across Consilium Academies is immensely proud of his achievement."

As a Silver Award winner, Andy has now been shortlisted for a Pearson National Teaching Award Gold Award. The national winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in London this November.

Everyone at Thornhill Academy and Consilium Academies wishes Andy the very best of luck and congratulates him on this well-deserved recognition.

National Thank a Teacher Day, and the Pearson National Teaching Awards are run by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity established over 25 years ago to celebrate the transformative impact of education, shining a spotlight on the pivotal roles teachers, support staff, colleges, schools and early years educators play in inspiring young people, every single day.

Sir Michael Morpurgo, author, former Children’s Laureate, and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: “The dedication and impact of those involved in educating young people is truly remarkable.

“Their influence extends well beyond the classroom. Long before children find their voice, their confidence, or their calling, there is usually a teacher who helped them get there, working patiently and persistently, and often without any recognition at all.

“That is what makes National Thank a Teacher Day so important. It is a rare and well-deserved moment to celebrate our teachers and say we are grateful.

"I am especially proud to congratulate this year's Silver award winners.

“In a world that moves quickly and demands so much, you have chosen to invest your time, energy, and passion into future generations, and that is something truly worth celebrating.

“Thank you for the dedication you show every single day"
